VA Tucson Medical Center – Correct Deficiencies in Inpatient Behavioral & Mental Health Unit B67 Project

Our team provided full architectural and engineering services to renovate and upgrade the Inpatient Mental Health Unit (B67) at the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SAVAHCS) in Tucson, AZ. The 10,500 SF unit, which includes private and semi-private patient rooms, day rooms, activity rooms, and support spaces, was renovated to address deficiencies and align with the 2017 hospital renovation. Key updates included reconfiguring the staff lounge and nourishment room, installing new suicide-prevention doors in patient restrooms, and upgrading mechanical and electrical systems. We also worked on roof drainage modifications and provided essential security enhancements, including new door alarm systems and card readers.

Construction was phased across five stages to ensure minimal disruption to hospital operations. Renovations were designed to improve safety, efficiency, and patient care while maintaining alignment with the overall hospital design. Our team completed detailed interior upgrades, including new flooring, painted walls, and the addition of padded flooring in the Seclusion Rooms. The mechanical systems were also overhauled, with new plumbing fixtures, waste piping, and energy-efficient lighting installed throughout. The project was completed on time with a construction cost of $8.5M, ensuring enhanced functionality and safety for the facility’s patients and staff.
