UC Irvine Medical Center

For the duration of design and construction, the new Douglas Hospital was the largest design-build replacement hospital project in Southern California.

MEP engineering services were provided the new acute-care facility dedicated to patient care, teaching and research. The new hospital replaces the main hospital building and connects to the existing emergency department and birthing center via an enclosed bridge. Design included seven floors plus a full basement providing 221 patient beds, 15 operating rooms, intensive care units, treatment rooms, and laboratories. A new cooling plant, all new utilities, HVAC and medical gas, electrical systems, high voltage power distribution, emergency supply, new generators and service from utility company were also included. The Replacement Hospital was completed four months ahead of schedule and $200,000 under budget.

The project was awarded a 2009 Regional Award from the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA).

Our firm also provided MEP engineering services for Phase 2 which inlcuded build-out of 66,000-sf MEP including demolition of the previous hospital building, site work and the construction of a porte cochere at the replacement hospital entrance. The $96M design-build project was completed in 2011.
