HRL Malibu – Emergency Generator & Electrical Service Upgrade

The HRL Lab facility underwent a significant upgrade to its electrical main service to accommodate increased load demands. The project included the installation of a new 4000A, 277/480V, 3-phase, 4-wire electrical service, consolidating the existing two services into a single, more robust service. Electrical load calculations accounted for higher compressor loads at the test stations. The upgrade involved developing single-line diagrams, voltage drop, and fault current calculations to ensure system reliability. New feeders replaced outdated ones to support the full capacity of the lab’s test stations, particularly for the Cryotest Lab. Additionally, a new emergency generator was integrated to provide backup power during outages, ensuring uninterrupted operation. Older electrical systems and panels were removed to optimize infrastructure, supporting both current and future operational needs.
