CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County
This exciting project brings a new seven-story (plus basement) patient care tower, central plant and renovation to the existing hospital. A 50,000-sf renovation of the Hospital’s existing tower was also completed to enhance continuity between the two patient care buildings. Design for the new tower includes pediatric surgical suites, radiology, laboratory, pathology and an emergency department. Total beds for the hospital is now 300 including a state-of-the-art NICU.
Designed to be one of the safest hospitals in the Country, innovative concepts were used from aerospace, aviation and manufacturing sectors. Each private patient room is identical, with supplies and equipment located in exactly the same place to reduce errors by the healthcare team. Nursing alcoves located in each room was designed allowing nurses to have closer access to patients. Advanced ergonomic design is also provided including curved walls and adjustable height work stations. Flooring materials, wall coverings and ceiling tiles were chosen to safeguard vulnerable patients from infection. HEPA air filtration systems, hands-free lavatories and faucets with minimal water flur duration was designed to encourage sufficient handwashing practices to reduce infections.
The project was awarded a 2014 Alliant Build America award from the Associated General Contractors Association (AGC).
