Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA

TTG provided support for a concept study to further the development of a new structure to be added to the Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI) at UCLA. The Eye Institute’s current program is housed in two adjacent buildings, the Jules Stein Eye Institute, inaugurated in 1966, and the Doris Stein Eye Research Center, dedicated in 1989. The two buildings together provide over 190,000-sf of space to accommodate the Institute’s activities.

Findings were able to identify the spatial needs for the new building and incorporate the challenges that were forthcoming. In addition, because the building was a collaboration between UCLA and the Institute, and both core and shell being built simultaneously, the building also had to be suitable for UCLA departments. The Institute for Urologic Oncology and Department of Neurosurgery would be the two UCLA departments chosen to be incorporated into the new building. Coordinated was managed and led the users to define spaces and departmental flows, producing bubble diagrams and working into schematic design. Designs were created to ensure that the user voices from the concept study were not lost, but rather displayed through the proper number of ORs, exam rooms, offices, etc. to provide the best care available. Room criteria sheets for the building, declaring the necessary built-in requirements to assist in the architectural and engineering development later on in the project were also developed.
